salsa

¡Globalquerque! is teaming up with the New Mexico Jazz Workshop to produce one night of Salsa Under the Stars. Our night is August 14, and we've decided to fly in one of NYC's hottest bands - José Conde y Ola Fresca. In typical ¡Globalquerque! fashion, we've opted for something that isn't straight salsa, but rather builds from a Cuban salsa foundation towards a pan-Caribbean stew.

José's got a funky side project called Baby Loves Salsa, and we couldn't let him come to town without sharing that as well. So in collaboration with the National Hispanic Cultural Center, ¡Globalquerque! and the Jazz Workshop will also present a kid friendly dance party at the NHCC at noon on Saturday, August 15.

Friday, August 14
Salsa Under the Stars with José Conde y Ola Fresca
Albuquerque Museum Amphitheater
2000 Mountain Road NW

jose condeOla Fresca means "fresh wave." Founded in 2000 by singer-composer-lyricist and arranger José Conde, Ola Fresca features some of the best musicians in New York City, coming together for a fresh take on rootsy, funky, jazzy, Latin dance music.

Born in Chicago and raised in Miami by his Cuban-immigrant parents, Conde has been living in New York since earning a BA from Berklee College of Music in 1997. After experimenting with jazz, rock, funk, blues and latin music in his first couple of years in New York, Conde realized his musical journey was leading him back to his Cuban roots. He formed Ola Fresca in 2000 with a clear goal to write new, original music based on the foundation of traditional, Cuban rhythms and style, while incorporating non-traditional elements for spice.

José Conde's music fits into the powerfully danceable rhythmic system of Afro-Cuban music. A Cuban would say it's got sabor de clave. He writes his own lyrics, too, and they have party flavor and humor, but they also have substance. Conde does his own arrangements—something few singers do—so both the charts and the production grow organically out of the words.

Tickets are $15 for adults; $13 for seniors (60+) and students w/ID; $12 for New Mexico Jazz Workshop (NMJW) and Albuquerque Museum Members.

Baby Loves SalsaThis is the story of a band of dogs and cats (gattitos y perritos) from the streets of New York that go on to become the best salsa band in the land. Baby Loves Salsa brings salsa to all kids and adults regardless of whether they speak English or Spanish or whether they dance on 1 or 2 or dance at all, everyone will move, everyone will sway, all will have loads of fun... This project was conceived with the goal of helping young kids (2-6 years) learn all about salsa and all about Spanish in a way that parents and kids children can enjoy together.

Produced by Grammy winning producer Aaron "Luis" Levinson (2006 winner, best salsa recording for the Spanish Harlem Orchestra) Baby Loves Salsa features some of the biggest and brightest stars in contemporary salsa music including band leader and singer José Conde. More than just Salsa for kids, singer-songwriter Jose Conde takes his Cuban roots and grafts them onto a dizzying range of Afro-Latin styles to bring to life an imaginary band of cats and dogs that create the ultimate special musical sauce (salsa especial). Baby Loves Salsa is a dance and music celebration geared toward Spanish and English speakers alike in a bilingual performance that includes "Somos la Banda" (We are the Band), "Bailar Rapido" (Dance Fast) and "Mi Familia es la Musica" (Music is My Family) among other originals.

Tickets from $5 to $15. Available at the NHCC Box Office and through all Ticketmaster outlets (TM phone: 505-883-7800).
